Binghamton Zoo Welcomes Baby Porcupine

The Binghamton Zoo is proud to announce the arrival of a prehensile-tailed porcupine, born on June 21, 2015. Zoo officials have been monitoring the progress of the baby and parents, Zoey and Mattie. Weighing in at 430 grams, it has progressively gained weight since birth. The sex of the baby cannot yet be determined and the name will be announced at a later time. The birth of this porcupine is a major success for the prehensile-tailed porcupine’s Species Survival Plan. Meet Jiang, Our New Red Panda

Welcome Jiang, a 12 year old red panda, sent to the Binghamton Zoo by recommendations from the red panda SSP (Species Survival Plan). Jiang joins us from the Roger Williams Zoo in Providence, RI. He is owned by Red River Zoo in ND. Jiang's name means “ginger” in Chinese. The pairing of Mei-Li and Jiang is considered very genetically valuable, especially since Jiang has not produced any offspring in his lifetime. November 11, 2014 - SSP NEWS: The Binghamton Zoo is excited to announce that we have been recommended by the prehensile-tailed porcupine Species Survival Plan to have a breeding pair in Binghamton. The zoo has housed sibling porcupines Henry and Zoey for the past few years. Henry recently moved to a new home at the Erie Zoo in PA.
